About

Born in Nanjing, China, adopted and raised in Colorado, the beginning of Mattie Hanson's interest in visual art began at a young age and academically continued into receiving a BFA in Photography in 2015. Hanson moved to New Orleans the fall of 2016 and was introduced to carpentry and fabrication. This new skill further grew their art practice expanding presenting a photograph beyond the traditional 2D. In using a combination of digital, film and alternative photographic processes Hanson integrates carpentry and fabrication to drive their concepts for a different approach and engagement from the viewer. After focusing on the skill development of carpentry, Hanson's engagement with the art community has included design, fabrication and installation with artists and curators in the New Orleans area since 2023. Mattie Hanson has worked with curators such as Brooke Wyatt, Stefan "Pro$per" Jones and Compton iii. Hanson recently was a part of the Asian American group exhibition “Go West” with their piece For What It’s Worth. A commentary on the international adoption system between China and the United States, combining image and sculpture to push a satiric perspective.
