Protective Styles: Narratives on Black Hair within Contemporary Art
Call to Artists
"How one wears Black hair, one’s crown, helmet, or protective combat headgear, continues to be the subject of hot debate within our community. Especially as appearance and success are intertwined in the Black community. Whereas Eurocentrism, still a major character in the Black narrative, prizes light complexions, light and straighter hair texture, and light eye color. The act of re-twisting, braiding, moisturizing, and washing one’s hair can be viewed as a praxis of 'laying on of hands,' helping the Black community to cope with the stresses of life and deep traumas. This praxis signifies renewal, ritual, and is part of a legacy the Black community, passes on from one generation to the next."
-excerpts from “Trauma, Tresses & Truth: Untangling Our Hair Through Personal Narratives.”
Edited by Lynette Wanzer
This exhibition poses the question:
How can the Black people and people of color break the chains of which their hair is interrogated, and how can this be portrayed in Contemporary art?
